Wendy Matis
Salt Lake City, UT

Wendy Matis grew up in a family that valued hard work and was very religious. She was raised alongside her cousin Stuart, who began realizing at the age of 7 that he was gay and was able to find the strength to come out at age 30. However, when he did so, he faced brutal hostility, and he tragically took his life two years later.

Three years later, Wendy’s own son came to her and her husband and also come out as gay. Wendy was determined to provide the love, support, and understanding that Stuart had not found, but she also worried that her son might not be afforded the same opportunities as everyone else because of a lack of nondiscrimination protections. “My son is a good student, pays taxes, performs community service, and is industrious, honest, and kind,” Wendy said. “The most vulnerable among us want only the opportunity to succeed and grow as others and live their lives with dignity.”
