The question of fairness and equality for transgender people is close to Melissa DeStefano’s heart because her son Aidan is transgender – he was born female but expressed from a young age that inside, he is a boy, and several years ago he transitioned to live as the boy he knows himself to be. During Aidan’s last year at Boyertown Area High School, he found his identity at the center of a lawsuit filed by an anti-LGBTQ organization, which claimed that the school district’s respect for transgender students harmed non-transgender students. Aidan testified at a hearing in the case, sharing his story.
“My heart swelled with admiration as Aidan made his personal life public on behalf of his peers,” Melissa said. “In 2017 he graduated from Boyertown High School and is thriving in every aspect of his life. … We should all be working toward ensuring all students can live the best life possible – and for Aidan, that means allowing him to be who he truly is.”
