Emmett Soldati, an openly gay man, runs a coffee shop in Somersworth – Teatotaller Cafe – which was a major meeting point in 2018 during the campaign to pass nondiscrimination protections for transgender people in the New Hampshire legislature. Emmett gladly opened his doors for volunteer events, public speaking panels, and more; not only is he a strong ally of the transgender community, but his assistant manager Palana is also transgender, which makes the issue of nondiscrimination extremely personal for Emmett.
“I know that it has sometimes been hard for many people in communities across the state to see how accepting and progressive all of their neighbors were, and seeing the bill pass surely made a positive impact,” Emmett said. “Your support for all people and opposition to discrimination can’t just be implicit. It has to be explicit.”
